Trump Links Greenland Ambitions to Nobel Peace Prize Snub in Extraordinary Message

In a remarkable escalation of diplomatic tensions, U.S. President Donald Trump has tied his push for control over Greenland to his disappointment at not winning the Nobel Peace Prize, a move that has sparked concern among European allies and widened rifts within the transatlantic alliance

Trump sent a written message to Norway’s Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre in which he said that because Norway did not award him last year’s Nobel Peace Prize, he "no longer feel[s] an obligation to think purely of Peace,” although he suggests peace will "always be predominant”

In the message, Trump asserted that the United States needs "complete and total control of Greenland” to ensure global security, questioning Denmark’s historic claim to the Arctic island and arguing that Denmark cannot adequately defend it against potential threats from Russia and China

The Nobel Peace Prize in question was not awarded by the Norwegian government but by an independent Nobel Committee, a point Støre emphasized in his response, clarifying that Norway does not have the authority to determine the prize’s recipient

Trump’s remarks come amid wider disputes over trade and security. Last week he threatened tariffs of 10% on imports from several European nations — including Norway and Denmark — unless the United States is allowed to negotiate the "purchase” or control of Greenland, a self‑governing territory of Denmark, itself a NATO ally

European leaders, including Britain’s prime minister, have rejected such economic coercion and called for de‑escalation, while reaffirming support for Denmark’s sovereignty over Greenland

Trump’s framing of his geopolitical objectives in terms of personal grievance over a Nobel Peace Prize snub has drawn international attention and criticism and highlights growing tensions between Washington and its European allies on issues of strategic importance in the Arctic and beyond
