A major winter storm has hit America, bringing heavy snow and large amounts of ice and is expected to last for several days

Road conditions have become increasingly dangerous across the central US since Saturday, with the hardest-hit areas – Kansas and northern Missouri – expected to receive up to 14 inches of snow

Around 60 million people in 30 US states are on weather warnings, with the National Weather Service warning of the possibility of severe thunderstorms, with the possibility of tornadoes and hail, in some areas over the coming days.

The states of Kansas, Arkansas, Kentucky and Virginia have declared states of emergency as the storm, driven by a polar vortex, moves east

The polar vortex is an area of low pressure and cold air that spins like a wheel around each of Earth's two polar regions. Sometimes, the arctic vortex oscillates and one of its lobes flows south, blanketing parts of North America in frigid temperatures

It's already led to crashes across the country, with a fire truck, several tractor-trailers and passenger vehicles overturning west of Salina, Kansas, on Saturday, and some trucks landing in ditches, said State Highway Patrol Trooper Ben Gardner

"We're in the middle of this right now," he said in a video clip he posted to social media while at the scene of the crash

To show the danger on the roads, the trooper filmed himself running across the cleared road and sliding for several seconds on what appeared to be black ice

He warned, "This is what we're dealing with here, and it's not getting better, it's getting worse, so stay off the roads"

Freezing rain in Wichita, Kansas, caused multiple crashes Saturday morning, authorities said, urging drivers to stay home if possible and watch out for emergency vehicles

The governors of neighboring Missouri and Arkansas declared states of emergency, while meteorologists warned that snowy conditions threatened to make driving dangerous or impossible

"Please stay off the roads. Crews are seeing too many vehicles sliding," the Missouri Department of Transportation said on the social media platform X
